COHABITATION AND HAVING CHILDREN DON’T MIX

The recently published Marriage at the Crossroads by Garrison and Scott, contains alarming statistics and observations on the American family. This book was reviewed in the Summer 2013 issue of Family Law Quarterly published by the ABA Family Law Section. Some alarming statistics and observations:
  • couples cohabiting when their child is born are much more likely to break up than married couples.
  • 81% of cohabiting couples bearing children would break up before the child turned 15.
  • 50% of children born to cohabiting parents will experience a loss of two parent household by age nine, compared to 20% of children born to married parents.
  • 25% to 30% of children born to cohabiting parents would experience three or more parental relationships transitions by age three.
